  20. <p>    THE BOTTOM LINE: There's a whole lot of shaking going on
  21. as Little Richard and others move into children's music.
  22. </p>
  23. <p>    Back in the quaint days when rock 'n' roll was young,
  24. parents used to get all shook up over the hip-swiveling antics
  25. and soulful squeals of Elvis Presley, Little Richard and other
  26. rock pioneers. Now Graceland is a venerable tourist attraction,
  27. and good golly, Miss Molly, Little Richard is whooping his way
  28. through an album of children's songs.

  30. <p>    The original wild man of rock 'n' roll struck a chord with
  31. the tiny-bopper set last year with a rambunctious rendition of
  32. Itsy Bitsy Spider that appeared on For Our Children, a benefit
  33. album for pediatric AIDS victims. Now he's back with Shake It
  34. All About, a collection of 12 children's classics all done up
  35. in Little Richard's flagrantly flamboyant style. He turns On
  36. Top of Spaghetti into a rhythm-and-blues lament, raps his way
  37. through If You're Happy and You Know It and performs a funky,
  38. fanny-wiggling version of The Hokey Pokey.

  40. <p>    This time, though, Little Richard isn't boogieing into new
  41. musical territory but following in some unlikely footsteps:
  42. those of a rebel named Raffi. Raffi is the Canadian troubadour
  43. whose frisky tunes and kid-comfy lyrics sold 7 million copies
  44. of albums and videotapes during the early 1980s and transformed
  45. children's music from a back water populated mainly by folk
  46. singers and people who performed preachy songs in funny voices
  47. into a booming business. Raffi has since retired from
  48. entertaining the peanut-butter-and-jelly crowd, but major record
  49. labels and musicians of every persuasion, from rock to reggae
  50. and from country to cabaret, have picked up on Raffi's riff.
  51. </p>
  52. <p>    Tunes for tots are hot, thanks largely to a rise in U.S.
  53. births, which reached a 24-year high of 4 million in 1989.
  54. Record companies "are reading the demographics and realizing
  55. that there are going to be a lot more children around," says
  56. Leib Ostrow, president of Music for Little People, a
  57. seven-year-old California-based company.
  58. </p>
  59. <p>    The phenomenon also reflects the fact that today's parents
  60. worry about the increasingly violent or sexually provocative
  61. lyrics that currently flood mainstream music. The grownups are
  62. more comfortable, says Mark Jaffe, vice president of Walt
  63. Disney Records, with material "that has a contemporary sound but
  64. lyrics that can relate to things that kids can relate to."
  65. </p>
  66. <p>    Thus traditional children's tales are being set to a
  67. contemporary beat. "I been rapping with kids for a long, long
  68. time/ Even your parents know my rhymes," chirps a character
  69. called Mama Goose on MCA's Nursery Rhymes Rap. And although many
  70. new songs continue to deal with subjects like eating vegetables
  71. or coping with siblings, some grapple with difficult family
  72. issues. "You see, Timmy's dad was married/ To his mom a while
  73. ago/ But now they are divorced/ Sometimes that's the way things
  74. go," sings Craig Taubman, who also records for Disney.

  76. <p>    Movie sound tracks remain the best sellers. Disney's
  77. Beauty and the Beast album has sold more than 1.9 million copies
  78. and has been on the pop charts for the past 49 weeks. MCA has
  79. tried to tap into the Nintendo craze with White Knuckle Scorin',
  80. an album about the video game that echoes the Who's celebration
  81. of a pinball wizard in the 1969 rock opera Tommy.

  83. <p>    Attentive parents can find other reminders of the glory
  84. days of their own youth. A&M Records' Tim Noah belts out a
  85. Springsteen-style anthem: "I was raised on rock 'n' roll/ Bo
  86. Diddley, Fats Domino/ Mama rocked me by the radio/ Raised on
  87. rock 'n' roll." Rory, who records for Sony, does a
  88. tongue-in-cheek imitation of Diana Ross in a cut from her album
  89. I'm Just a Kid. This Saturday, Radio AAHS, a 24-hour children's
  90. station in Minneapolis, will sponsor a concert featuring
  91. well-known kids' performers like Joanie Bartels and Bob McGrath.
  92. They're calling the event Kidstock.
  93. </p>
  94. <p>    Still, the clearest sign that kiddie music has arrived is
  95. the presence of performers like Little Richard, who are more
  96. familiar on the adult circuit. Cabaret singer Michael Feinstein
  97. recorded Pure Imagination, 19 children's songs from musicals and
  98. films. Last summer, Disney released Country Music for Kids,
  99. featuring Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris and the Oak
  100. Ridge Boys. However they play it, this music isn't just kid
  101. stuff anymore.
